My Poetry: Misophonia

Poetry

Hello all and happy Tuesday! I thought I’d share this poem I wrote as a coping mechanism a while back because my misophonia has been at an all time high lately and not many people seem to understand what it even is or how it feels for those who experience it. So, to help promote awareness, here is a quote from Harvard’s medical school,

“People with misophonia are affected emotionally by common sounds — usually those made by others, and usually ones that other people don’t pay attention to. (Breathing, yawning, chewing, etc.) create a fight-or-flight response that triggers anger and a desire to escape.”

Please feel free to look up misophonia on your own to explore this disorder a bit more and gain more information on it. I hope y’all enjoy the poem!

Misophonia

by: Kristyn Garza

Miss-oh-phone-ee-uh.

A strong reaction to

specific sounds.

A “rare” disorder,

though not commonly known,

that many suffer from.

Suffer in silence.

Drip drip drip drip.

Clank clank clank clank.

Tap tap tap tap.

Make it stop, this

cacophony!

Repetitive

sounds,

block it all out.

Anger, rage, fury, seethe,

try not to let the

PANIC

get to you.

Chomp chomp chomp chomp.

Rattle rattle rattle rattle.

Crunch crunch crunch crunch.

Can’t take much more of this

pandemonium!

Uproarious noise,

obnoxious sounds

(common to most)

build into a symphony of

horror, pain, unbearable torture.

Contain it, stifle the inferno inside your

head, until it incinerates every bit of you.

Explode in a fiery rage when you can’t

take any more.

Regret every

venomous, harsh, acidic, scalding

word that sparks—ignites—from your

volcano of a mouth.

Run away from the shame.

Apologize profusely.

Accept the fact that not many will

understand what you’re going through.

Their opinion doesn’t matter so long as

you understand that

Misophonia does not define you.
