If You Like This, Then You Should Try This…Book and Anime Style 3.0

Hello all and happy Thursday! Yes, I’m doing yet another one of these posts where I combine my love for literature and my love for anime. I’m sorry if y’all don’t like these or find them annoying but also, I’m not really that sorry because I absolutely love doing these! I watch way too much anime and I end up finding some really great gems that it’d be a crime against anime to not tell someone so here I am, recommending more anime for y’all. Sorry, not sorry! Fair warning though, four out of the six shows I’m recommending are shounen-ai, BL (boys love), or yaoi so if you’re not into that then I recommend only checking out the first two shows because the last four are the ones I’m referring to. For those of y’all who have no idea what I’m talking about, shounen-ai is gay romance that is extremely tame and really just like undertones rather than blatantly coming out and making the relationship known, BL is a little bit more than shounen-ai but still pretty tame and shows little to nothing, and lastly, yaoi is homosexual romance which includes cute platonic relationship stuff as well as sexual life. This is your fair warning, though I still highly recommend all of these shows so please don’t let this deter you form checking them out! I hope y’all enjoy and end up finding something you like!

For those of y’all who really enjoy the dynamic between Julian and his younger siblings (like Tavvy) in Cassandra Clare’s Lady Midnight, I highly recommend watching School Babysitters (Gakuen Babysitters). This show follows the story of Ryuuichi and his little brother Kotarou moving to a new home and new school after losing both of their parents in a plane crash. They are taken under the care of a chairwoman of an elite academy who has recently lost her son and daughter-in-law. Ryuuichi is, thankfully, able to maintain his friendly and openly kind personality but Kotarou, a reserved toddler still too young to understand what has happened to them both, remains closed off to anyone but his big brother who is now his only guardian. While the two brothers were kindly taken in, there is one condition Ryuuichi must do in exchange for the chairwoman’s help—he must become the school’s babysitter. To help support the female teachers at the academy, a babysitter’s club was established to look after their infant children. Unfortunately, the club is short-staffed and desperate for help so now Ryuuichi is responsible for his little brother as well as a handful of toddlers. This is a heartwarming show that depicts the love between brothers, lots of comic relief, the heartbreak of losing family, and (of course) adorable as heck little anime babies who are flamboyant and so freaking kawaii!

If you enjoyed the adorable awkwardness of Lena and Ethan in Beautiful Creatures, I’m sure you’ll love watching Tsuredure-Children. Young love takes many forms that grow and change as children mature into adults. Being unable to confess, not knowing what real love actually feels like, etc. are just a few examples of the various obstacles that can arise when experiencing romantic attraction for the first time. Underneath all that, young love is truly beautiful, leading to brand new experiences for young lovers. This show depicts different scenarios of young love coming to fruition, along with the struggles and joys that sprout from it. There are various couples that this show follows so I’m sure you’ll find one that really resonates with you. The awkwardness, the excitement, and the clumsy beauty of first love blooms spectacularly in this adorable anime that’s relatable for anyone who’s been awkward and in love.

For those of y’all who enjoyed the story of the five friends attending a prestigious New York City performing arts school while connecting over the same dream of stardom in You In Five Acts, then Starmyu is the show for you! This show follows the story of five students—Yuuta Hoshitani, Tooru Nayuki, Kaito Tsukigami, Kakeru Tengenji, and Shuu Kuga as they struggle together to enter the musical department of Ayanagi Academy, a prestigious school that focuses on music. They need to be accepted to the Star Frame Class, which is directly taught by the members of Kaou-kai, the most talented students from the musical department who stand at the top of the musical hierarchy at the academy. Luckily, they are given a chance to shine by Kaou-kai council member, Itsuki Ootori. This is the story of a group of young men who will stop at nothing to make their dreams come true with a lot of really great music (yes, they randomly break out in song sometimes) and really beautifully drawn characters (my personal favorite is Ootori-senpai). It’s a great show for musical lovers or folks who are just really interested in the industry of stardom.

If you enjoyed the angsty gang aspect of The Outsiders, then you should definetely check out Hitorijime My Hero. This is the story of Masahiro Setagawa who is a hopeless teenager often used by his neighborhood gang as an errand boy. Masahiro knows that nobody will ever save him from his position with the dangerous gang he follows or from his terrible home life (his mother works as an escort). Even though he knows he’ll never be saved, his life drastically changes when he meets Kousuke Ooshiba, a man known as the “Bear Killer” by the neighborhood gangs since he beats the gangsters into cleaning up their act. After some time passes Masahiro and his best friend, Kensuke Ooshiba, attend high school to find that Kousuke (Kensuke’s older brother) is their math teacher. While the three grow closer, Masahiro starts to view Kousuke as his “hero,” and Kousuke develops a desire to protect and love Masahiro. Meanwhile Kensuke’s childhood friend, Asaya Hasekura, returns and confesses that he sees Kensuke as more than just a friend. Filled with forbidden love and a bunch of cute, heartwarming moments, this show explores the relationship between Kensuke and Hasekura, as well as Masahiro and Kousuke. This is not a yaoi, it is a shounen-ai/boys love anime that depicts two homosexual relationships in an adorable and cute way without showing anything vulgar or openly pda-ish. You have been warned! (But, I recommend still watching it even if it’s not your thing because it’s so cute and well done!)

For those of y’all who enjoyed the cuteness of Simon and Blue in Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda, then I highly recommend watching Dakaichi I’m Being Harassed by the Sexiest Man of the Year (Dakaretai Otoko 1-i ni Odosarete Imasu). I know it’s a long and off putting title but bare with me, it’s worth it. The show follows the story of Saijou Takato whose five year reign as a popular magazine’s ‘Most Huggable No. 1’ has been stolen by a new up and comer in the acting industry. The man responsible for stealing Takato’s spot is none other than the newbie actor who’s only been in the business for three years, Junta Azumaya. Takato’s stuffy and hostile exterior starts to waver as he spends more and more time with Azumaya and his sincere sparkling smile that has made everyone around him come to call him “the angel”. This show is definitely a yaoi (a boys love anime that not only shows the cuteness of the their platonic relationship but also their sexual life). If this turns you off then I recommend skipping this one but I’ll have y’all know that it’s really cute and tastefully done so, I still highly recommend it for your viewing pleasure because Takato and Junta (or “Chunta” as Takato so lovingly calls him) are so damn cute!

Lastly, if y’all enjoyed everything about Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows duology, please do yourselves a favor and check out Banana Fish, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed! This fabulous show follows the seventeen year old gang leader of New York, Ash Lynx. Nature made Ash beautiful but life made him a cold ruthless killer. Ash is a runaway who was brought up as the adopted heir and sex toy of “Papa” Dino Golzine, one of New York’s worst mafia bosses. Ash, after taking so much crap throughout his life, forsakes the status he’s been given by the devilish Golzine and rebels against the man who’s mistreated him and abused him for most of his life. Meanwhile, the terrible secret that drove Ash’s older brother, Griffin, insane in Vietnam has suddenly fallen into Golzine’s nefarious hands. With all of this drama going on, it’s exactly the wrong time for Eiji Okumura, a pure-hearted, innocent young photographer from Japan, to meet Ash Lynx and fall head over heels for this life of danger and intrigue. Fair warning, there is a trigger warning for this show since Ash’s character has been raped since the age of eight and the show often touches on this subject to show Ash’s dark past so, trigger warning for any of y’all who need it. I cannot recommend this show enough, it is so beautiful and heartbreaking and everything I could’ve ever wanted in an anime (it has easily become my favorite anime of all time and, I dare say, one of the best anime in general of all time). Ash and Eiji are more of shounen-ai couple because nothing ever really happens between them but I’m sure you’ll still, like me, ship them so damn hard. Ash reminds me so much of Kaz in Six of Crows—his brokenness, his coldness, his hotness (let’s face it, most of us were very much attracted to Kaz), his cleverness, his dangerous nature, his sorrow and dark past. Highly recommend!!
